Statement by TES-IS Chairman Kabaloglu on Afsin Elbistan Thermal Power Plant

Irfan Kabaloglu, Chairman of the Turkish Energy, Water and Gas Workers’ Union (TES-IS), stated that the work continues for the Afsin Elbistan Thermal Power Plant to start production again.

In his written statement, TES-IS Chairman Irfan Kabaloglu emphasized that the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaras and affecting 10 provinces continue their investigations in the region, they travel from province to province and provide aid to citizens and support the work of energy workers.

Pointing out that the destruction was quite large in some parts of Adiyaman, Kahramanmaras and Hatay, Kabaloglu noted that the energy infrastructure was also damaged in some parts of these cities.

Kabaloglu stated that his members in energy production and distribution companies continue their work with devotion and gave the following information:

“We have members who lost their lives, we have members who lost their loved ones. We are faced with a sad picture. Energy workers, on the one hand, are suffering and on the other hand, they cling to their jobs. Efforts are underway to meet the energy needs in the earthquake area. There does not appear to be any problem with the dams at the moment, but production at Afsin Elbistan Thermal Power Plant, one of the most important electricity generation facilities in the region, has stopped due to the earthquake. Efforts continue devotedly to restart production in the two units of this power plant, which has an important place in Turkiye’s energy production. Our estimations are that the power plant will start production again in 15 days. As the union family, we will continue to do our best to heal the wounds.”
