Electric car sales in Turkiye tripled in 8 months

Electric car sales in Turkiye rose to 3 thousand 283 in January-August 2022, an increase of almost 3 times compared to the same period of the previous year.

According to the data compiled from the Automotive Distributors Association (ODD), the total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkiye decreased by 8.5% in the 8 months of this year compared to the same period of 2021 and became 458 thousand 446.

In the said period, automobile sales decreased by 9.4% to 354 thousand 543 units and light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 5.2% to 103 thousand 903 units.

When the automobile market is evaluated according to the engine type, it is noteworthy that the decline in the sales of diesel-powered automobiles, whose production has been gradually reduced worldwide, and which is planned to be completely stopped in the future, continues. The fact that manufacturers offer fewer diesel-powered vehicles to the market compared to previous years is also considered to be one of the important factors in the decline in diesel sales.

Autogas car sales also decreased. The sales of hybrid and electric cars, which are expected to replace cars with internal combustion engines in the future, continued to increase as in recent years.

Gasoline car sales are in the first place

In the Turkish automobile market, in the first 8 months of this year, gasoline cars took the first place with 250 thousand 401 sales, while diesel cars took the second place with 60 thousand 316 units.

While hybrid car sales were 34,265, auto gas car sales were 6,278 and electric car sales were 3,283.

In January-August 2021, 256,815 gasoline, 80,643 diesel, 33,287 hybrid, 19,451 auto gas and 1,196 electric cars were sold. Thus, sales of electric cars increased approximately 3 times.

Only hybrid and electric car sales increased

Gasoline car sales decreased by 2.5%, diesel car sales by 25.2% and auto gas car sales by 67.7% in the 8 months of this year compared to the same period of 2021.

In this period, hybrid car sales increased by 2.9% and electric car sales increased by 174.5%.

An increase in sales reveals consumer interest

The share of diesel cars, which was 20.6% in January-August 2021, decreased to 17% in the same period of this year.

In the said period, the share of gasoline cars increased from 65.6% to 70.6%, while the share of autogas cars decreased from 5% to 1.8%.

The share of electric cars in total sales increased from 0.3% to 0.9%, and the share of hybrid cars increased from 8.5% to 9.7%.

The data pointed out that the share of electric and hybrid cars, which are also becoming widespread in the world, in the Turkish automobile market is at low levels. Although it is low in terms of units, the growth rate of sales reveals the interest of consumers in electric cars.

The market share of “green cars” is expected to increase further with Togg’s entry into the market and developments in the world in the future.
