37% of hazelnut exports of Turkiye came from Trabzon

37% of hazelnut exports from Turkiye in the first 8 months of the year were made from Trabzon.

Eastern Black Sea Exporters Union Hazelnut and Products Industry Committee Vice Chairman Sebahattin Arslanturk, in a written statement, reminded that there are 4 months left until the end of the 2022-2023 hazelnut export season.

Emphasizing that they are hopeful that the amount of hazelnuts to be exported will exceed 300 thousand tons at the end of this period, Arslanturk said:

In the 8-month period of the hazelnut export season, which started on September 1, 2022, 80 thousand 799 tons of hazelnuts worth $488 million 650 thousand 588 were exported from Trabzon. In the 8-month period, 37% of the total hazelnut exports were made from Trabzon. During this period, hazelnuts were exported to 59 countries from Trabzon.

Pointing out that hazelnut exports should be carried to a sustainable level, Arslanturk pointed out that the continuous shrinking of land structures, especially through inheritance, increases the costs per unit and eliminates the competitiveness.

Arslanturk stated that due to the high production costs, the producer could not do enough care in the orchards, this situation causes a decrease in production, yield and yield every year, especially in industrial agricultural products, and this negativity has become much more prominent in hazelnut production in recent years.

Arslanturk stated that the low level of productivity per unit in Turkiye, the world’s largest hazelnut producer, negatively affects the profitability of both the producer and the trader. He stated that in order to obtain more and high quality products from the unit area, an urgent transition should be made to the competitive and sustainable hazelnut farming policy, which prioritizes productivity.
