Airline giant easyJet to open new Birmingham base early with flights to 16 destinations on sale this week

City breaks and sun spots are plentiful in easyJet’s list of 16 destinations it will be flying starting early in 2024

A budget airline is set to open its new Birmingham base early with routes to 16 destinations set to go on sale in days. The low-cost flights firm announced plans for its new base at Birmingham International Airport in the summer

And those plans will now have an early take-off, with the first easyJet flights taking off on March 18 next year. Preparations for the new routes are well underway and the flights go on sale this week. Some 16 destinations have been announced with beach/city breaks to Barcelona in Spain (three flights a week) and Antalya in Turkey (twice a week) the first to leave BHX in mid-March.

The next day will see easyJet fly to Alicante on the Spanish mainland and Tenerife in the Canary Islands, both twice a week. With flights to Larnaca in Cyprus in the summer, Malaga in Spain and Enfidha in Tunisia – both year round, all going on sale the same week.All twice a week.

In April 2024 twice weekly flights start to German capital, Berlin, on April 1. And to the popular Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh, and Channel Island, Jersey on April 2, once a week.

Flights to Heraklion in Crete, Greece, start on April 3. And a new summer route to Dalaman in Turkey and a second Canary Island, Fuerteventura, on April 4. Later in the month, Greek island, Rhodes joins the list on April 23, followed by fellow Green destinations, Corfu on May 1, then Kos on May 3.

The new flights start with easyJet opening its three-aircraft Birmingham base, which is technically in Solihull, with 186-seat Airbus A320s. It says it will eventually operate 29 routes from Birmingham. The new flights to the first 16 routes go on sale on Thursday, November 30 on its website or mobile app.

The new Birmingham easyJet hub will be the firm’s first new base in the UK in more than a decade and its ninth in total. It will create 100 direct jobs for pilots and crew and 1,200 indirect jobs. It is the largest UK airline employing 10,000 people.

Antalya, Barcelona, Berlin, Fuerteventura, Enfidha, Sharm el Sheikh, Rhodes, Dalaman, Jersey, Larnaca, Malaga, Alicante, Tenerife, Corfu, Kos, and Heraklion.

Tom Screen, aviation director for Birmingham Airport, said: “The 16 new destinations easyJet will begin serving in the weeks from March 2024 when they open their three-aircraft base at BHX. To say we’re excited is an understatement. This will bring jobs to the region and greater choice for customers, particularly as easyJet holidays cements its place in the Midlands market with great package deals.”
