Tesla Inc. reported a 13% drop in global vehicle deliveries in the second quarter of 2025, with 384,122 vehicles delivered—down from the same period last year. This marks the second consecutive quarter of declining sales for the electric vehicle (EV) maker. To return to growth for the full year, Tesla must close a 110,000-vehicle gap in the second half of 2025.
Despite the decline, deliveries surpassed the most pessimistic forecasts. Some analysts had projected a drop of over 20%, while the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey stood at 389,407 units. The relatively better-than-feared results prompted a rise in Tesla’s stock price.
Tesla’s Struggles Continue Amid Growing Competition
The latest figures contrast with CEO Elon Musk’s comments in mid-May, when he claimed Tesla’s auto business was recovering from a sluggish start to the year—attributed in part to policies under the Trump administration.
Tesla had been counting on renewed interest in its most important products—the refreshed Model 3 and Model Y—to drive Q2 results. However, these models lost some of their appeal in comparison to offerings from Chinese rivals BYD and Xiaomi.
Deliveries of the Model 3/Y totaled 373,728 units, slightly below analyst expectations of 377,295, and down 12% year-over-year.
Growth Doubts as Tesla Fails to Launch Cheaper Models
In April, Tesla told investors that lower-priced models were on track to enter production in the first half of the year. However, these new vehicles have yet to materialize, leading many analysts to speculate about production delays.
As a result, many now expect Tesla to post a second consecutive year of declining vehicle deliveries. According to a Bloomberg analyst survey, Tesla is forecast to deliver 1.65 million vehicles in 2025, an 8% decline from the 1.79 million units delivered in 2024.
Despite the weak Q2 results, Musk stated in a May 20 interview with Bloomberg News that Tesla’s vehicle deliveries had begun to recover and that the company no longer anticipates significant shortfalls.
