TESPAM President Akyener: Electricity installed power received an investment of approximately $4.5 billion in 2022

Oğuzhan Akyener, Head of the Turkish Energy Strategies and Policy Research Center (TESPAM), reported that approximately $4.5 billion was invested in Turkiye’s installed power in electricity.

Akyener told Anadolu Agency (AA) that Turkiye’s installed electricity capacity has increased by more than 4,000 megawatts, adding, “Electric installed power received an investment of approximately $4.5 billion in 2022. Approximately $3.5 billion of this was realized in the field of renewable energy.”

Evaluating the investments in the sector this year, Akyener stated that a British firm met with the Energy Market Regulatory Authority to make an investment of $4 billion and said, “New investments will come to Turkiye in 2023.”

According to the data of Turkiye Electricity Transmission Inc. (TEIAS), Turkiye’s installed power in electricity increased by 4 thousand 148 megawatts from 99 thousand 609 to 103 thousand 757 megawatts in 2022. Installed power increased by 4.2% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

The highest capacity increase in installed power was seen in renewable energy sources.

While solar power plants with a total installed capacity of 9 thousand 424 took the lead with an increase in capacity of 1611 megawatts, the installed power of wind power plants increased by 704 megawatts to 11 thousand 396. The installed power of biomass power plants increased by 270 megawatts to 1906 megawatts, and the installed power of hydroelectric power plants increased by 84 megawatts to 31 thousand 571 megawatts.

On the other hand, in the same period, the installed power in imported coal increased by 1380 megawatts to 10,374 megawatts, in lignite it increased by 72 megawatts to 10,192 megawatts, in natural gas it was calculated as 25,310 megawatts with an increase of 13 megawatts.

Thus, solar power capacity increased by about 20%, biomass by 16%, imported coal by 15% and wind power capacity by 9%.

Turkiye’s electricity production in 2022 was 321.6 million megawatt-hours

Last year, 321 million 606 thousand megawatt-hours of electricity was produced and 324 million 347 thousand megawatt-hours of electricity was consumed in Turkiye.

On a monthly basis, the highest electricity production was 31 million 232 thousand megawatt-hours and the highest electricity consumption was 31 million 557 million megawatt-hours in August.

In the same year, electricity exports were recorded as 3 million 710 thousand megawatt-hours, and electricity imports as 6 million 140 thousand megawatt-hours. The highest export was realized in January with 425 thousand 317 MW, and the highest import was realized in November with 741 thousand 278 MW.
