Turkey Begins Natural Gas Exports to Syria, Doubling Power Generation Capacity

Kilis, Turkey — Turkey has officially started exporting natural gas to Syria as part of its broader effort to support the rebuilding of the war-torn country’s energy infrastructure. The move marks a significant step in bilateral cooperation following the collapse of the Baath regime in December 2024 and aims to help normalize life across the region.

The first flow of gas begins today through a newly restored pipeline stretching from Kilis to Aleppo, completed on May 21. The line has a daily capacity of 6 million cubic meters, with the potential to deliver up to 2 billion cubic meters annually.

The imported natural gas will be used in a power plant in Aleppo, generating approximately 1,200 megawatts of electricity. This boost is expected to double Syria’s current electricity output, increasing daily power availability from 3–4 hours to up to 10 hours in some regions.

Regional Energy Cooperation

On July 30, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the gas exports would involve cooperation with Azerbaijan and Qatar. Under this arrangement, Azerbaijani gas reaching Turkey will be redirected to Syria through the Kilis-Aleppo line.

Electricity Exports to the North Also Rising

Turkey’s support is not limited to natural gas. Ankara also plans to expand electricity exports to northern Syria. Currently, 280 megawatts are supplied via existing lines, but the historic Birecik–Aleppo electricity line, with a 500-megawatt capacity, is also being restored.

Once fully operational, Turkey could export up to 900 megawatts of electricity, enough to power approximately 1.6 million households in Syria.

This initiative underscores Turkey’s strategic role in stabilizing post-conflict Syria, with energy supply seen as a cornerstone for economic recovery and humanitarian improvement.
