Turkey: Birth rate of employer enterprises at 13.6%

Highest birth rate was in wholesale/retail trade, repair of motor vehicles/motorcycles sector, says TurkStat

Turkey saw a 13.9% birth rate of employer enterprises for the year 2018, the country’s statistical authority reported Thursday.

“The highest birth rate in employer enterprises was in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector as 30.8%, for 2018,” TurkStat said.

The institute said this sector was followed by manufacturing with 13.2% and transportation and storage with 12.7%, respectively.

TurkStat’s entrepreneurship report covers the period between 2016 and 2018. The institute defines employer enterprise as an active enterprise with at least one employee.

While the ratio of newly born employer enterprises to all employer enterprises decreased to 13.6% from 13.9%, the ratio of employment creation by employer enterprises births increased to 4.9% from 4.6%.

TurkStat said the one-year survival rate of employer enterprises newly born in 2017 was 82.1% in 2018.

According to their legal status, the highest rate among employer enterprises born in 2018 was sole proprietorships with 70.3%. The rate of employment creation by this legal status was also the highest, at 51.8%.

Official figures revealed that the rate of sole proprietorships owned by women was 19.3% in 2018.

According to the TurkStat, the rate of sole proprietorship enterprises owned by women exhibited an upward trend over the years.
