
BRUSSELS — Global crude steel production declined in January due to a sharp contraction in China, while Turkey stood out among major producers by recording an increase in output.
According to January data released by the Brussels-based World Steel Association (Worldsteel), global crude steel production fell by 6.5% year-on-year to 147.3 million metric tons.
Sharp Drop in China
China, the world’s largest steel producer, saw its output decline by 13.9% compared to the same month last year, falling to 75.3 million tons in January.
Among other major producers:
- Japan’s steel production decreased by 0.5% year-on-year to 6.8 million tons.
- U.S. production rose by 3.3% to 7.1 million tons.
- Germany posted a strong 15% increase, reaching 3.1 million tons.
- South Korea’s output climbed 5% to 5.6 million tons.
Turkey Records Growth
Turkey’s crude steel production increased by 5.8% year-on-year in January, reaching 3.4 million tons, placing it among the countries that positively diverged from the global downward trend.
Elsewhere, Brazil’s steel production fell by 1.4% to 2.7 million tons, while Iran’s output was estimated to have risen by 15.1% to 2.6 million tons.
