Mehmet Ali Kilickaya, Export General Manager of the Ministry of Commerce, stated that as of 2021, e-exports corresponds to 1.3% of the general exports and said, “We aim for the share of our e-exports to reach 10% of our overall exports.”

At the 2nd E-Commerce Summit held at Bogazici University, both the increasing importance of online commerce and its growth targets were discussed, and the BiTiklaIhracat free training and consultancy program, which aims to support SMEs and entrepreneurs in the field of online sales and e-export in Turkey, was introduced.

Mehmet Ali Kilickaya, Export General Manager of the Ministry of Commerce, stated that e-commerce presents new opportunities with the Covid-19 outbreak, and emphasized that Turkey has reached $2.6 billion in e-exports with the rapid increase, but emphasized that its potential in this area is much greater.

Noting that Turkey’s e-exports amount to 1.3% of overall exports as of 2021, Kilickaya said, “With the new support mechanisms and the action plans we will implement, we will ensure that this rate reaches at least 3% to 5% in 2025, when we come to 2030. On the other hand, we aim for the share of our e-exports in our overall exports to reach 10%.”

Hasan Onal, Head of the Department of E-Export, Digital Marketing, Behavioral Public Policies and New Generation Technologies at the Ministry of Commerce, stated that they have prepared a comprehensive package to take SMEs further in the field of e-export. He emphasized that the BiTiklaIhracat project, supported by Amazon Turkey, will play an active role in improving the e-export capacity of SMEs.

“The world e-commerce pie is expected to reach $4.1 trillion in 2022”

PwC Turkey Senior Partner Cenk Ulu pointed out that e-commerce has started to radically change physical retail in the world.

Pointing out that the world e-commerce cake is expected to reach $4.1 trillion in 2022 and $5.7 trillion in the next year, Ulu used the following statements:

“When we look at Turkey, according to the data on the Ministry of Commerce’s own website, there is a market of ₺181.5 billion in 2021. The number of orders is ₺3.4 billion. When we look at the carbon emission part, we see much lower rates than physical retail. It is more efficient in terms of sustainability. It also contributes to social innovation with its support to occupational health, safety and women’s workforce.”

Ulu stated that the marketplaces on e-commerce provide significant advantages for SMEs, that the number of SMEs entering digital platforms is increasing rapidly, that they have the opportunity to reach consumers at lower costs, and that the number of women entrepreneurs has increased by 35% recently.
