Turkey’s automotive production increased by 28% in the first 5 months

Turkey continues to increase its momentum in the automotive industry. In the statement made by the Automotive Industry Association (OSD), production and export numbers and market data for the period of January-May 2021 were shared.

Accordingly, in the first 5 months, total automotive production increased by 28% to 532 thousand 441 units, while automobile production increased by 23% to 353 thousand 580 units. Together with the tractor production, the total production was 556 thousand 513 units.

In the said period, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was determined as 65%. On the basis of vehicle group, capacity utilization rates were 65% in light vehicles (cars + light commercial vehicles), 60% in heavy commercial vehicles and 77% in tractors.

In the January-May period, commercial vehicle production increased by 40%. While production increased by 86% in the heavy commercial vehicle group, there was an increase of 37% in the light commercial vehicle group. Total commercial vehicle production was 178,861 units.

Looking at the market, the commercial vehicle market increased by 90%, the light commercial vehicle market by 83% and the heavy commercial vehicle market by 130% in the January-May period. Despite the increase in the heavy commercial vehicle group compared to the previous year, when the base effect is taken into account, the truck market shrank by 32%, the bus market by 52% and the midibus market by 75% compared to 2015.

MARKET WAS OVER 12% OF 10-YEAR AVERAGES

In the first 5 months of the year, the total market increased by 74% compared to the same period of 2020 and amounted to 328 thousand 679 units. In this period, the automobile market increased by 69% to 247 thousand 977 units.

Considering the averages of the last 10 years, in January-May 2021, the total market increased by 12%, the automobile market increased by 18%, the light commercial vehicle market decreased by 24% and the heavy commercial vehicle market decreased by 1.6%.

In this period, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was 40%, while the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 53%.

EXPORTS INCREASED BY 18%

In the said period, automotive exports increased by 18% on the basis of units and amounted to 391 thousand 70. Automobile exports, on the other hand, increased by 10% to 256 thousand 621 units. Tractor exports, which experienced an increase of 106%, were recorded as 9 thousand 700 units.

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), the automotive industry retained its first place by taking a 14% share from the total exports in the first 5 months.

In the January-May period, total automotive exports increased by 37% in dollar terms and 26% in euro terms. While total automotive exports amounted to $12.3 billion, automobile exports increased by 22% to $4.2 billion.

On a Euro basis, automobile exports increased by 11% to €3.5 billion. While the exports of the main industry increased by 30% in dollar terms, the exports of the supply industry increased by 50%.
