Last year, the United Nations changed the country’s name in foreign languages from ‘Turkey’ to ‘Türkiye’ upon Türkiye’s request. A UN spokesperson said that then Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres requesting that Turkey’s name in foreign languages be changed to ‘Turkey’ and that the request was approved and entered into force.

Türkiye has been using ‘Türkiye’ instead of Turkey as the country name on international platforms since December 2021. Türkiye’s change of its foreign-language name to Turkey is accepted from all over the world. Technology giant Microsoft also took a step in this regard and changed the country name to ‘Türkiye’ in the Windows version.

According to the information compiled by TGRT News, foreign companies operating in Turkey are making the necessary arrangements in this regard. Microsoft removed the word ‘Turkey’ and added ‘Türkiye’ with the ‘build 22621.2500’ coded software update for its computer operating system Windows 11.

“This update changes the name ‘Republic of Turkey’ in English. The new name is ‘Republic of Türkiye’.”

Meanwhile, the new Windows update is now available to users enrolled in the Microsoft Insider program. The update is expected to roll out to all users in the coming days.

Why did the name ‘Türkiye’ change In English, the word ‘Turkey’ means ‘turkey’ as well as ‘Türkiye’. Therefore, Türkiye’s being called by this name in the international arena was causing a backlash and the word was sometimes used in both senses in campaigns aimed at defaming Türkiye.
