Assembly of switchgear has begun in Akkuyu NPP

The assembly of the integrated gas-insulated switchgear with 400-kilowatt voltage of Akkuyu NPP (Nuclear Power Plant), Turkiye’s first nuclear power plant project, has begun.

According to the statement made by Akkuyu Nuclear Inc., the 400-kilowatt high-tech installation, which is a part of the electrical equipment system of the power plant, which will meet 10% of Turkiye’s electricity needs alone when it reaches full capacity, is designed to transmit electricity to the grid.

The switchgear, which is a multifunctional equipment that contains the auxiliary components and connection components necessary for the transmission of electricity, such as busbars, circuit breakers, earthing disconnectors, current transformers and gas-insulated busbars, both significantly reduces the dimensions of the integrated distributor and increases the operating comfort and reliability.

Akkuyu Nuclear Inc. First Deputy General Manager and NGS Construction Director Sergey Butckikh, whose views are included in the statement, underlined that the start of the assembly of the integrated switchgear is an important stage for the Akkuyu NPP project, “While simultaneously constructing the four power units of the nuclear power plant, we are also installing the equipment that will take place in the electricity supply process. It is worth noting that the integrated switchgear is gas-insulated. This equipment also has a high level of fire safety because gas insulation prevents the spread of flames in the event of a fire. After the installation of the facility is completed, we will start the start-up and adjustment works of the Akkuyu NGS electrotechnical system. This phase will bring us one step closer to the start-up and tuning work on the first power unit.”
