Turkey’s Net International Investment Position Deficit Narrows to $323.3 Billion in October

According to data released by the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT), Türkiye’s net International Investment Position (IIP) deficit stood at $323.3 billion in October 2025.

The net IIP is defined as the difference between Türkiye’s external assets and liabilities. In October, the country’s external assets increased by 0.9% month-on-month to $399.2 billion, while external liabilities declined by 0.2% to $722.5 billion.

As a result, the net IIP deficit improved compared with the previous month, when it stood at $327.1 billion.

Reserve Assets at Record High

Reserve assets rose by $3.5 billion to $183.6 billion, reaching their highest level on record, according to the CBRT.

When external assets are broken down by components, direct investment assets increased by 1.3% to $73.5 billion, while other investment assets decreased by 0.5% to $137.3 billion. Banks’ foreign currency cash and deposit assets declined by 4.2% to $40.9 billion.

Breakdown of Liabilities

Within portfolio investment liabilities, the amount of bonds issued abroad by other sectors and purchased by non-residents increased by 7.2% to $16.5 billion.

A month-on-month breakdown of liabilities shows that direct investment liabilities decreased by 1.9% to $209.6 billion. Portfolio investment liabilities edged up by 0.1% to $131.0 billion, while other investment liabilities increased by 0.7% to $381.9 billion.

The CBRT said the latest figures indicate a modest improvement in Türkiye’s external balance position, supported by record-high reserve assets despite persistently high external liabilities.
