Turkish automobile industry numbers & exports in the first 7 months of 2020

Automotive Manufacturers Association presented production, export and market data of the first 7 months of 2020. According to that information; 636 thousand 757 vehicles were produced in the first 7 months and this amount was decreased by 27 percent compared to first 7 months of 2019, 440 thousand 103 automobiles were produced and this amount was decreased by 24 percent. The total number of produced vehicles reached 653 thousand 592 with the tractor production. Heavy commercial vehicle production in the first 7 months of 2020 was decreased by 16 percent, light commercial vehicle production was decreased by 16 percent and commercial vehicle production was decreased by 32 percent compared to last year.  

In the first 7 months, commercial vehicle market was increased by 65 percent, light commercial vehicle market was increased by 66 percent and heavy commercial vehicle market was increased by 58 percent compared to last year. Considering the base effect, commercial vehicle market of the first seven months is 40 percent lower than the market of 2017.

40 thousand 324 commercial vehicles and 3 thousand 313 tractors were produced in July. 351 thousand 319 vehicles were sold in the automotive market in July; this number was increased by 60 percent compared to July 2019.  273 thousand 22 automobiles were sold in July and automobile market was increased by 59 percent.

Considering the average sales number of the latest decade, total automotive market was decreased by 19 percent, light commercial vehicle market was decreased by 34 percent and heavy commercial vehicle market was decreased by 51 percent in the first 7 months of 2020. The share of imported vehicles in the automobile market is 61 percent while it is 39 percent in light commercial vehicle market in the 7 months.

78 thousand vehicles were exported in July; 480 thousand 425 vehicles were exported in the first 7 months of 2020 and this amount was decreased by 36 percent compared to last year. Automobile export was decreased by 32 percent; 333 thousand 725 automobiles were exported in the first 7 months. Commercial vehicle export is also decreased by 44 percent. 7 thousand 450 tractors were exported in the first seven months and this amount is decreased by 22 percent compared to last year.

10 thousand 613 automotives were exported in April, 44 thousand 406 automotives were exported in May, 70 thousand 210 automotives were exported in June and 78 thousand 242 automotives were exported in July; European trade is nearly stopped in 2020.

According to the data of Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), the automotive export in the first 7 months maintained it’s position as the most export making industry with 14.4 percent share. Automotive industry covered the 14.7 percent share of the total July export.


Comparing the first 7 months of 2020 and 2019, the total automotive export is decreased by 29 percent on dollar basis and 28 percent on euro basis. The total automotive export in the first 7months is valued at 13 billon dollars while automobile export is decreased by 27 percent and valued at 5 billion dollars. Automobile export value on euro basis is decreased by 26 percent and valued at €4.5 billion. Key industry export is decreased by 32 percent and procurement industry export is decreased by 23 percent.
