Turkish automotive industry closed 2022 with an increase in production, exports, and domestic market

In 2022, total automotive production increased by 6% compared to the previous year and reached 1 million 352 thousand 648 units, while automobile production increased by 4% to 810 thousand 889 units.

Accordingly, total automotive production in 2022 increased by 6% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 1 million 352 thousand 648 units. Automobile production increased by 4% to 810 thousand 889 units. Together with the tractor production, the total production reached 1 million 402 thousand 189 units.

In 2022, commercial vehicle production increased by 10% compared to the same period of the previous year. In this period, production increased by 26% in the heavy commercial vehicle group and 8% in the light commercial vehicle group.

Last year, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 70%. On the basis of vehicle group, capacity utilization rates were 70% in light vehicles (cars + light commercial vehicles), 92% in the truck group, 41% in the bus-midibus group and 66% in the tractor.

Automotive exports increased by 6% compared to 2021 and reached $31.5 billion

In the said period, automotive exports increased by 4% on the basis of units compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 970 thousand 124 units. In this period, automobile exports increased by 1% and commercial vehicle exports by 7% compared to the previous year. Tractor exports, on the other hand, increased by 7% compared to 2021 and reached 18 thousand 154 units.

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), total automotive industry exports ranked second in the sectoral export ranking with a share of 12.2% in 2022. According to Uludag Exporters’ Association (UIB) data, last year, total automotive exports increased by 6% compared to 2021 and reached $31.5 billion. On a euro basis, it increased by 18% to €29.9 billion. In this period, exports of the main industry increased by 4% and supply industry exports increased by 9% in dollar terms.

The total market increased by 7% to 827 thousand 147 units.

Compared to the previous year, there was a growth of 11% in the total commercial vehicle market, 24% in the heavy commercial vehicle market and 9% in the light commercial vehicle market.

In 2022, compared to the previous year, sales of imported light commercial vehicles increased by 1% and domestic light commercial vehicles increased by 15%. In this period, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was 39%, and the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 59%.
