Europe’s Wind Energy Sees a 6% Decrease in Additional Capacity Last Year

The additional capacity of wind energy in Europe decreased by 6% last year compared to the previous year, reaching 18.3 gigawatts, according to a report titled “Wind Energy in Europe: 2023 Statistics and 2024-2030 Outlook” prepared by the European Wind Energy Association WindEurope.

According to the report, last year, onshore wind farms accounted for 14.5 gigawatts of the increase in wind energy capacity in Europe, while offshore wind farms contributed 3.8 gigawatts.

The additional capacity of wind energy in Europe, totaling 18.3 gigawatts, recorded a 6% decrease compared to the previous year. The total wind energy capacity in Europe is 272 gigawatts, with onshore wind farms constituting 238 gigawatts and offshore wind farms constituting 34 gigawatts.

Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, stated in an evaluation to the decrease in additional capacity, when viewed annually, is not of a nature to concern the wind energy sector. Dickson expressed that there will be capacity increases in the wind energy sector in the period 2024-2030, stating, “The permit processes for new projects have accelerated in Europe. Moreover, investments have increased. With the European Union announcing its package supporting wind energy last year, confidence in this field has increased. Thus, it is anticipated that investments and capacities will also increase.”
