Turkish Consortium Led by IC İçtaş Wins Romania’s Railway Modernization Tender

A consortium led by IC İçtaş İnşaat has won the tender for the modernization of a strategic railway line in Romania, connecting the cities of Craiova, Drobeta Turnu Severin, and Caransebeș. The project was commissioned by Romanian National Railway Company CFR SA, and will be carried out by the IC İçtaş-Rotary Constructii MentenantA S.A. consortium.

According to a statement from IC İçtaş İnşaat, the consortium signed a design and construction contract for the renovation of the 42-kilometer Drobeta Turnu Severin–Baile Herculane segment. The project includes the complete renewal of the rail system, along with platforms, electrical systems, signaling, and safety infrastructure.

€460 Million Investment in Romania’s Transport Future
The project, valued at approximately €460 million, is part of Romania’s 2021–2027 Transport Program under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. It is considered one of the country’s most significant infrastructure investments, aimed at enhancing economic competitiveness, improving integration with the European transport network, and promoting modern, efficient, and sustainable railway infrastructure.

The scope of the project includes:

Upgrading infrastructure to support 22.5-ton axle loads and train lengths up to 740 meters

Modernization of 7 tunnels and 23 bridges

Extensive infrastructure improvements at station locations

Optimization of track geometry to increase safety and operational efficiency

Modernization of electrification, signaling, and telecommunication systems

Installation of soundproof panels and other noise reduction solutions

Once completed, these upgrades are expected to significantly boost traffic and capacity along this segment of the European rail corridor.
