Turkish Government Bonds Deliver Best Returns in June as Gold Posts Sharpest Losses

ISTANBUL — Turkish government domestic borrowing securities (DİBS) were the best-performing investment instrument in June, while bullion gold recorded the steepest losses, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK).

When adjusted for inflation using the Consumer Price Index (CPI), DİBS generated the highest monthly real return among major investment instruments. The strong performance reflected favorable movements in the bond market during June, outperforming deposits, foreign exchange, equities and precious metals.

Bullion gold, by contrast, posted the weakest performance of the month. After delivering strong gains earlier in the year, gold prices declined in June, resulting in the largest real loss among the main investment vehicles as global market conditions and investor expectations shifted.

Other investment instruments, including bank deposits, the U.S. dollar, the euro and the Borsa Istanbul (BIST 100) index, recorded mixed performances over the month, with returns trailing those of government bonds.

TÜİK’s monthly comparison evaluates the inflation-adjusted performance of key financial assets, providing investors with a measure of real purchasing power rather than nominal returns.

The June figures highlight a shift in investor preferences, with fixed-income securities outperforming traditional safe-haven assets, while gold experienced a notable correction after its earlier rally.
