ISTANBUL — Türkiye’s shipbuilding industry is launching a strategic expansion into the African market, with Nigeria selected as the first target under a new initiative aimed at increasing the global presence of Turkish shipyards.
The project is being led by the Turkish Shipbuilders’ Association (GİSBİR) with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Technology as part of the Shipbuilding Industries Clustering Project, which seeks to strengthen the international competitiveness of Türkiye’s shipbuilding sector.
Nigeria has been identified as the initial focus due to its growing maritime industry, increasing demand for commercial and offshore vessels, and its strategic role in West Africa’s shipping and energy sectors. Turkish shipbuilders aim to explore opportunities in ship construction, maintenance and repair services, as well as broader maritime cooperation with Nigerian stakeholders.
The initiative forms part of Türkiye’s broader strategy to diversify export markets and expand the international footprint of its maritime industry. By establishing partnerships in Africa, Turkish shipyards hope to secure new commercial opportunities while showcasing their expertise in building a wide range of vessels, from commercial ships to specialized maritime platforms.
Industry representatives believe the Nigeria-focused program could serve as a gateway to other African markets, paving the way for long-term cooperation across the continent and reinforcing Türkiye’s position as a competitive global shipbuilding hub.
