Turkiye and Spain Strengthen Collaboration in Energy Transition

New Energy Transformation Agreement aims to bolster joint efforts towards sustainable economic development and renewable energy adoption

Turkiye and Spain have solidified their commitment to enhancing cooperation in the energy sector with the signing of the Energy Transformation Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement, aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties and fostering sustainable economic development goals, underscores both countries’ dedication to transitioning towards green energy.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Turkiye, under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s goal to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2053, is intensifying investments in renewable energy sources and expanding its international partnerships in the green energy transition process.

During President Erdoğan’s official visit to Madrid for the Turkiye-Spain 8th Inter-Governmental Summit, the Energy Transformation Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar and Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenges Teresa Ribera Rodríguez.

The agreement aims to collaborate on key areas of energy transformation such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, carbon emission trading, energy storage, hydrogen technologies, and critical minerals. It also includes provisions for joint projects between public institutions and the private sector, as well as sharing of knowledge and experiences.

Additionally, capacity-building initiatives and joint working groups will be established, along with information exchanges on energy policies, regulations, and standards between the two countries.

Minister Bayraktar, who participated in the Turkiye-Spain Business Forum, discussed potential collaborations in renewable energy, green hydrogen, hydrocarbons, and mining sectors with Minister Rodríguez during their meeting.
