Türkiye and Syria Intensify Talks to Achieve New Trade Records

ANKARA / ISTANBUL — April 6, 2026

Türkiye and Syria have stepped up diplomatic and economic engagements in a bid to boost bilateral trade and reach new record levels, as both countries explore expanded cooperation across multiple sectors.

Recent political and diplomatic contacts have been accompanied by a series of economic meetings aimed at strengthening trade ties, particularly following the shifting political landscape in Syria since late 2024.

High-Level Meetings and Investment Forum

As part of these efforts, the first meeting of the Türkiye–Syria Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) is scheduled to take place, co-chaired by Trade Minister Ömer Bolat and Syria’s Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal Shaar.

Alongside the meeting, a Türkiye–Syria Business and Investment Forum will be held, bringing together business leaders from sectors including:

  • Energy
  • Construction
  • Healthcare
  • Agriculture and food
  • Logistics and transportation
  • Education and textiles

Participants are expected to engage in bilateral talks and explore new investment opportunities, while panel discussions will focus on logistics, banking, and contracting.

Strong Growth in Trade Volumes

Trade data indicates a sharp rise in economic activity between the two countries. Türkiye’s exports to Syria increased by approximately 60% in 2025, reaching $3.5 billion, up from $2.2 billion the previous year.

The upward trend has continued into 2026. In the first two months of the year, exports exceeded $666 million, marking the highest level recorded since 2013, according to official statistics.

Motor vehicles and related parts emerged as the leading export category during this period.

Targeting New Records

Syria has been added to Türkiye’s “target countries for exports” list for 2026, underscoring its growing importance in Ankara’s trade strategy.

Officials expect that ongoing engagements and upcoming meetings will unlock new cooperation opportunities and pave the way for further expansion in trade volume.

Broadening Economic Cooperation

Both countries are focusing on deepening collaboration across industries such as energy, transportation, industry, and trade, with the goal of creating a more integrated economic relationship.

Experts suggest that the current momentum—driven by both political normalization and economic initiatives—could lead to record-breaking trade levels in the near future.
