Turkiye: Automotive production increased by 2% in the first half of the year

Turkiye’s automotive production increased by 2% in the first half of the year and amounted to 649 thousand 311 units.

In the statement made by the Automotive Industry Association (OSD), production and export data for the January-June period were shared.

Accordingly, in the first half of the year, total automotive production increased by 2% compared to the same period of 2021 and increased to 649 thousand 311 units, while automobile production decreased by 8% to 382 thousand 947. With the tractor production, the total production reached 673 thousand 991 units.

In this period, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 67%. On the basis of vehicle group, capacity utilization rates were 67% in light vehicles (cars + light commercial vehicles), 88% in the truck group, 33% in the bus-midibus group, and 66% in tractors.

In the January-June period, commercial vehicle production increased by 19% to 266 thousand 364 units, while the rate of increase was 26% in heavy commercial vehicles and 18% in light commercial vehicles.

Looking at the market, in the first half of the year, the commercial vehicle market decreased by 4% and the light commercial vehicle market by 6%, while the heavy commercial vehicle market increased by 3%. Despite the increase, especially in the heavy commercial vehicle group, when the base effect is taken into account, the truck market shrank by 30% and the bus and midibus market by 53% compared to 2015.

The market is 3% above the 10-year averages

In the period covering the first half of the year, the total market decreased by 9% compared to the previous year and amounted to 375 thousand 683 units. In this period, the automobile market shrank by 10% and became 278 thousand 282 units.

Considering the averages of the last 10 years, the total market increased by 3% and the automobile market by 4% in the January-June period of this year. While the heavy commercial vehicle market increased by 10%, the light commercial vehicle market was parallel to the previous year. In this period, the share of domestic vehicles was 39% in automobile sales and 59% in light commercial vehicles.

The share of the sector in total exports was 12.1%.

In the first half, automotive exports increased by 1.2% on the basis of units compared to the same period of the previous year, and were recorded as 466 thousand 995. Automobile exports decreased by 9% to 271 thousand 54 units. Tractor exports increased by 13% to 8 thousand 906 units.

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), the automotive industry ranked second in the sectoral ranking with a 12.1% share from total exports in the January-June period.

In the said period, automotive exports increased by 5% in dollar terms and 16% in euro terms. Total automotive exports decreased by $15.5 billion and automobile exports decreased by 7% to $4.5 billion.

Automobile exports in euro terms increased by 3% to €4.1 billion euros. In the first 6 months, exports of the main industry increased by 4% and supply industry exports by 7% in dollar terms.
