Turkiye: Card payments rose to ₺446 billion in January

The total amount of payments made in January with credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards increased by 146% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached ₺446 billion.

Interbank Card Center (BKM) announced its data for January.

Accordingly, at the end of January, 101.4 million credit cards, 171.4 million debit cards and 73.2 million prepaid cards are used in Turkiye.

Compared to January 2022, the number of credit cards increased by 18%, the number of debit cards by 14%, and the number of prepaid cards increased by 25%.

The total number of cards reached 346 million, an increase of 17% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Payment by debit card grew by 154%, and payment by credit card grew by 145%.

According to the data, the total amount of payments made with credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards in January increased by 146% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached ₺446 billion. While ₺358.5 billion of these payments were made with credit cards, ₺79.4 billion of debit cards and ₺8.1 billion of prepaid cards were used.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the growth rate was 145% in credit card payments, 154% in debit card payments, and 121% in payments made with prepaid cards.

Public-tax payments with cards nearly doubled last year

In January, when the first installment of the Motor Vehicles Tax (MTV) was paid, the amount of card payments in the “public-tax payments” sector, which covers these payments, amounted to ₺19.3 billion. While this value corresponds to an 85% growth compared to the same period of 2022, the share of tax payments in total credit card payments was 4.2%.

In January, the amount of card payments made online in public-tax payments increased by 85% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached ₺11.5 billion. Online payments made up 60% of the amount of card payments made in public-tax payments.

Thus, ₺3 of every ₺5 tax payment made with cards was made online.
