ISTANBUL – Türkiye has risen to become the world’s seventh-largest crude steel producer and Europe’s largest steel-producing nation, highlighting the country’s growing role in the global industrial supply chain.
According to data compiled from the World Steel Association (worldsteel), Türkiye produced 36.9 million metric tons of crude steel in 2024, ranking eighth globally. However, performance during the first eight months of 2025 lifted the country to seventh place worldwide, surpassing Germany to become Europe’s top steel producer.
The world’s largest steel producer remains China, with annual output exceeding 1 billion tons, followed by India (149 million tons), Japan (84 million tons), the United States (79.5 million tons), Russia (71 million tons), and South Korea (63.6 million tons). Türkiye now ranks ahead of Germany, Brazil, and Iran in global production.
Veysel Yayan, Secretary General of the Turkish Steel Producers’ Association (TÇÜD), said Türkiye’s steel industry has strengthened its position in global markets thanks to its flexible production capabilities, high product quality, and rapid delivery times. He added that the sector exports to more than 180 countries, making it an essential link in international supply chains.
Yayan also noted that Türkiye’s steel producers maintained uninterrupted operations during periods of global disruption, including the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing the industry to improve its international competitiveness and expand its market share
