MasterCard announced spending data of foreign tourists in Turkiye in 2023: Saudi Arabians spent the most on leather products and clothing

According to MasterCard data, the leading payment method in card tourism expenditure transaction volume and number was debit card.

MasterCard announced that the number of tourists increased by 15% in 2023, and 63% more spending was made on a turnover basis.

According to the statement made by the company, the 12-month periods of 2022 and 2023 were compared within the scope of the report prepared based on POS expenditures of foreign cards with MasterCard and Maestro logos in Turkiye and other selected countries.

Transactions made with foreign cards in Turkiye saw a 12% growth in terms of quantity in 2023 compared to the previous year. In the same period, the leading payment method in the transaction volume and number of card-based tourism expenditures was debit cards.

In terms of the number of transactions, 67% debit cards and 33% credit cards were used.

While the increasing trend of grocery expenditures in card-based tourism expenditure transactions compared to last year continues, the growth rate of foreigners’ expenditures in Antalya has surpassed other provinces.

City-based turnover distribution in card-based tourism expenditure transactions was respectively: Istanbul 46%, Antalya 20%, Mugla 9%, Izmir 4 percent, Aydin 2% and other provinces 19%. Sector-based turnover distribution was jewelery/duty free/leather products 20%, clothing 17%, hotel 15%, restaurant 12%, grocery store 8% and others 27%.

In Mugla, which is one of the five cities where foreigners spend the most, foreigners spend the most on hotels, while jewelery/duty free/leather products are the driving force in other provinces.

When the country-based distribution of individual foreign cards spent in Turkiye is considered, cards of UK origin maintained their top place in terms of turnover.

The top five countries based on annual turnover were the UK with 6%, Germany with 19%, the USA with 13%, the Netherlands with 5% and Saudi Arabia with 5%, respectively.

The annual growth rates of these countries in 2023 compared to 2022 were: England 35%, Germany 17%, USA 17%, Netherlands 8% and Saudi Arabia 33%.

Some of the results reflected in the report were as follows: The sectors in which spending was generally made were health, jewellery/duty free/leather products, restaurants, clothing and hotels. The highest number of visits by foreign tourists to Turkiye took place in the third quarter of the year with 42%. The British spent on groceries, restaurants and clothing respectively, the Germans spent on clothing, hotels and restaurants respectively, the Americans spent on hotels, restaurants and markets respectively, and the Dutch spent on gasoline, restaurants and clothing respectively, Saudi Arabians spent on jewellery/duty free/leather products, clothing and hotels.
