Turkiye exported $34.8 billion of services last year

Turkiye’s service exports amounted to $34.8 billion in 2021 and its imports amounted to $27.9 billion.

Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced the international services trade statistics for 2021.

Accordingly, exports of services excluding travel rose from $24.9 billion in 2020 to $34.8 billion in 2021, an increase of 39.6%. Service imports, on the other hand, rose from $22.8 billion in the same period to $27.9 billion with an increase of 22.3%.

According to the expanded balance of payments services classification, while the share of transportation in total exports was 64.6% in 2020, it became 70.2% in 2021.

The share of “other business services”, which ranked second, decreased from 11.7% in 2020 to 10.1% in 2021.

In service exports, in 2021, the “telecommunications, computer and information services” sector took the third place with a share of 7.4%.

While the share of transportation in service imports was 35% in 2020, it became 39.1% in 2021. The share of “other business services”, which ranked second, was 21.2% in 2020, while it was 21.5% in 2021.

The “telecommunications, computer and information services” sector, which has a share of 11.7% in service imports, ranked third last year.

Most service trade was with the European Union

Service exports to EU countries in 2021 were recorded as $12 billion 688 million, while exports to other European countries were recorded as $5 billion 614 million.

In imports, in 2021, imports from EU countries were $12 billion 164 million, and imports from other European countries were $3 billion 562 million.

EU countries became the leading country group in Turkiye’s service exports and imports in 2021. EU countries became the country group with the largest share in total service exports with 36.5%. 43.5% of total service imports were made with EU countries.

Germany took the first place in service exports and Ireland in imports

In service exports, 28.2% of total exports in 2021 were with Germany, the USA and the United Kingdom.

Germany took the first place with a share of 11.9% in service exports and with an export of $4 billion 130 million, followed by the USA with a share of 10.8% and the United Kingdom with a share of 5.5%.

Ireland took the first place in imports last year with a share of 10.6% and $2 billion 962 million. Germany took the second place with a share of $2 billion 414 million and 8.6%, and the USA took the third place with a share of 8,5% and $2 billion 387 million.
