Turkiye: Flight traffic of domestic airlines increased 5 times

In Turkiye, which has made significant investments in the aviation sector, the number of passengers carried by airline companies has increased 8 times since 2000. Passenger traffic has also increased 5 times in 20 years.

While the most important sectors that shape the world economy and add volume, such as foreign trade and tourism, come to life thanks to aviation, it is also noteworthy that Turkiye is building its future under the wings of the aviation industry.

The aviation industry is the backbone of the country’s economies, regardless of cargo and passenger transportation. Investments in the sector and Turkiye’s accessibility increase its attractiveness and reliability for foreign investors.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the world aviation industry has a direct and indirect economic contribution of $2.7 trillion. The aviation industry also contributes to the socio-economic welfare of states with the cultural and commercial bridges it has established between countries.

Turkiye is rapidly rising in the global rankings

According to the compilation made from ICAO data, the increase in Turkiye’s share in world and European air travel reveals the country’s increasing success in this field with the projects carried out.

Domestic airline companies carried 12.9 million passengers in 2000, while Turkiye ranked 26th in the global ranking.

In 2021, when the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic continued, Turkiye, which hosted 70.7 million passengers with the effect of Istanbul Airport, rose to the 7th place.

Turkiye maintained its 7th place last year, with domestic airline companies carrying approximately 100 million passengers. Thus, the number of passengers carried by domestic airline companies has increased 8 times in 21 years, as Turkiye has made significant investments in the aviation sector in the last 20 years.

Meanwhile, the airlines in question carried 115.6 million passengers in 2018, which was recorded as a “record”.

Passenger traffic increased 5 times

The fact that Turkiye has made significant investments in the aviation sector in the last 20 years has made the country the leading country in the aviation sector in the world.

Located in the middle of the world’s continents (on the East-West/North-South axes), Turkiye has a strategically important place in air transportation thanks to its geographical position, and reveals its importance in the air transportation race with its air traffic increasing day by day.

The increase in the total number of passengers in Turkiye is also noteworthy. Domestic and international passenger traffic, which was 34.4 million in 2003, increased by 430% compared to 2003 last year, reaching over 182.3 million.

Turkiye, which ranked 18th in the number of passengers at world airports in 2003, rose to 6th at the end of 2021. In the ranking of the number of passengers at European airports, it was ranked 7th in 2003 and ranked 2nd in 2021.

While Turkiye’s share in world and European air travels is gradually increasing, the country caught the passenger share of 2.83% in the world and 12.05% in Europe in 2021.

Istanbul Airport greatly contributed to Turkiye’s increase in its share in world and European air travel. Last year, Istanbul Airport ranked 7th in the “Top 10 Busiest Airports in the World” list published by the Airports Council International, with more than 64 million passengers last year.

Aircraft traffic and the number of domestic passengers doubled

While the aircraft traffic served with overpasses was 529 thousand 205 in 2003, this number increased more than 3 times and reached 1 million 883 thousand in 2022.

Domestic passenger traffic, which was 9 million 128 thousand 124 people in 2003, increased by 760% last year to 78 million 670 thousand passengers.
