ISTANBUL, June 10, 2026 — Türkiye is preparing for what could become a record year for cherry exports, as favorable weather conditions, strong flowering, and improved crop yields raise expectations for a significant rebound in production following last year’s climate-related losses. Industry representatives expect export revenues to exceed $200 million during the 2026 season.
Türkiye remains the world’s leading cherry producer and one of the largest exporters of the fruit. After severe frost damage sharply reduced harvest volumes in 2025, growers and exporters report that winter chilling conditions, successful pollination, and the absence of major spring frosts have created ideal conditions for a much stronger crop this year.
According to sector estimates, Türkiye exported approximately 83,000 tons of cherries in 2023 and 67,000 tons in 2024. Export volumes collapsed during the frost-affected 2025 season, but the industry is now targeting more than 60,000 tons of exports and over $200 million in export revenue in 2026.
Strong Recovery Expected After Frost Damage
Exporters say last year’s reduced harvest may have indirectly contributed to this season’s outlook by allowing trees to recover and restore production capacity. Cherry orchards across key growing regions have shown healthy flowering and fruit set, supporting expectations of higher yields and improved fruit quality.
The harvest season stretches from April through July and benefits from Türkiye’s diverse geography, allowing growers to supply international markets continuously for up to ten weeks. Industry leaders describe this extended supply window as one of Türkiye’s key competitive advantages over rival producers in Europe and elsewhere.
Germany Remains the Largest Market
Germany continues to be the most important destination for Turkish cherries, while Russia, Austria, and several Middle Eastern and Asian markets remain significant buyers. Exporters are also increasing their focus on East Asian destinations such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia as they seek to diversify markets and improve margins.
Despite optimism about production, exporters warn that rising logistics, packaging, energy, and financing costs remain major challenges. Maintaining competitiveness in European markets while expanding into Asia will be critical to achieving record export revenues.
Agriculture Continues to Support Export Growth
The anticipated recovery in cherry exports comes as Türkiye continues to post strong export performance across multiple sectors. The country recorded record overall export figures in 2025, highlighting the growing importance of both industrial and agricultural exports to the national economy.
If favorable weather conditions persist throughout the remainder of the season, industry representatives believe Türkiye could achieve one of its strongest cherry export years on record, reinforcing its position as a leading supplier to global markets.
