Türkiye ranks 7th globally in growth of solar power generation

Türkiye has become the 7th country in the world to increase electricity generation from solar energy the most, according to the latest “Global Electricity Review” published by the energy think tank Ember. The report, which analyzes data from 91 countries representing the majority of global electricity demand, highlights Türkiye’s strong momentum in renewable energy.

In 2025, Türkiye significantly boosted its solar power output, placing it behind leading countries such as China, the United States, India, Brazil, Pakistan, and Germany. It ranked ahead of countries like Italy, France, and the Netherlands in terms of growth.

The data also shows that Türkiye generated 22% of its electricity from wind and solar energy, exceeding the global average of 17%. Meanwhile, the share of solar energy alone in Türkiye’s electricity mix doubled over the past two years, reaching 10.5% in 2025.

Globally, renewable energy sources reached a historic milestone by accounting for 33.8% of total electricity generation, surpassing coal for the first time in over a century. Solar energy led this transformation, recording a 30% annual increase, the fastest growth in eight years.

Despite the strong rise in wind and solar output, Türkiye experienced a decline in hydroelectric production, which led to increased reliance on natural gas to meet energy demand. Overall, the report underscores Türkiye’s growing role in the global clean energy transition, while also pointing to ongoing challenges in balancing different energy sources.
