Turkiye: Record exports from ready-to-wear and apparel

Ready-to-wear and apparel industry achieved the highest January-September period exports of all time with $16 billion 172 million of exports in the 9 months of this year. In the ready-made clothing and apparel sector, Germany was the country with the highest export sales last month, with $296 million.

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), Turkiye’s exports increased by 9.2% in September compared to the same month of the previous year and amounted to $22.6 billion. Thus, the highest September exports have been reached so far.

In January-September 2022, exports increased by 17% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching $188.2 billion. Annualized export value exceeded $252.6 billion.

The ready-made clothing and apparel industry, which realized an export of $1 billion 942 million in September 2021, decreased by 0.7% in the same period of this year and made $1 billion 928 million of exports.

In January-September 2022, the ready-made clothing and apparel industry realized an export of $16 billion 172 million with an increase of 9.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. Thus, the sector reached the highest January-September period exports of all time.

A portion of $1.4 billion of the sector’s exports last month was made from Istanbul. Bursa followed Istanbul with $144 million and Izmir with $114 million.

$11.1 billion of the sector’s exports of $16.1 billion in the January-September period of this year were realized from Istanbul, $1.4 billion from Bursa and $1.1 billion from Izmir.

The sector made the highest export sales to Germany in 9 months

In the ready-made clothing and apparel sector, Germany was the country with the highest export sales last month, with $296 million. Germany was followed by Spain with $245 million and the United Kingdom with $197 million.

In the January-September period, the sector exported $2.8 billion to Germany, $2 billion to Spain and $1.6 billion to the United Kingdom.

Looking at the country groups to which the most exports were made last month in the sector, EU countries ranked first with $1.1 billion, other European countries with $258 million, and Commonwealth of Independent States countries with $189 billion.

In the 9 months of this year, $9.9 billion were exported to EU countries, $2 billion to other European countries and $1.2 billion to Middle East countries.

According to TIM data, the ready-made clothing and apparel industry, which exported to 179 countries and regions last month, received an 8.5% share of the country’s total exports in the same period.

Exporting to 213 countries and regions in the 9 months of this year, the sector had a share of 8.6% in the country’s total exports.
