Minister Alparslan Bayraktar has emphasized Turkiye’s readiness to enhance Europe’s energy supply security. Speaking to Japan’s Nikkei newspaper, Bayraktar stated, “If Europe demonstrates political will, commitment, and invests in interconnection infrastructure, we can export up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually to Central and Eastern Europe through the Balkan Pipeline.”
Support for Rebuilding Syria’s Energy Infrastructure
Minister Bayraktar also addressed the reconstruction of Syria’s energy infrastructure, revealing that a ministry delegation recently returned from Syria and found the country’s energy systems to be in poor condition. He said, “Significant investment is required. Currently, we supply electricity to cities like Aleppo and Afrin, and this supply can be extended further south. Additionally, diesel generator fuel can be provided to households.”
Bayraktar noted the possibility of constructing a natural gas pipeline from Turkiye to Syria and suggested that floating power generation plants owned by the private sector could be deployed if transmission lines are repaired. He called on the international community to support Syria’s reconstruction and advocated for lifting sanctions on Damascus.
Qatari Gas to Europe via Turkiye
Addressing the potential revival of a natural gas pipeline project from Qatar through Syria to Turkiye, Bayraktar highlighted the benefits of energy diversification. He remarked, “Once Qatari gas reaches Turkiye, it can be delivered to Europe using Turkiye’s existing pipeline infrastructure through swap agreements.”
However, Bayraktar stressed that such a project requires a secure transportation system, which depends on a stable Syria and a stable region. He concluded, “All of this will take time.”
Turkiye’s commitment to bolstering regional energy security and its strategic position as a hub for gas supply to Europe underscores its pivotal role in the global energy landscape.
