Türkiye Targets Over $100 Million in Annual Sturgeon Export Revenue

ANKARA — June 1, 2026

Türkiye’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is aiming to generate more than $100 million in annual export revenue by expanding the country’s sturgeon farming industry, as officials seek to strengthen high-value aquaculture production and increase exports of caviar and sturgeon products.

The ministry said Türkiye possesses significant potential for sturgeon cultivation due to its extensive freshwater resources and favorable geographic conditions. Authorities are working to increase production capacity and support investments in the sector as part of broader efforts to diversify aquaculture exports and create new sources of foreign currency income.

Sturgeon is considered one of the world’s most valuable aquaculture species because of its premium caviar, which commands high prices in international markets. In addition to caviar, sturgeon meat is also regarded as a high-value export product. The species is protected under international regulations, making controlled farming operations an increasingly important source of supply.

Ministry officials emphasized that expanding domestic sturgeon production could help Türkiye gain a larger share of the global caviar market while supporting rural development, employment, and technological advancement in the fisheries sector. The government is expected to encourage private-sector investments and research initiatives aimed at improving breeding and production efficiency.

Türkiye has emerged as one of the leading aquaculture producers in Europe in recent years, with exports of farmed seafood continuing to grow. According to industry data, the country’s fisheries and aquaculture exports reached approximately $2.24 billion in 2025, supported by strong international demand for products such as sea bass, sea bream, trout, and Turkish salmon. The sector’s long-term export target is to exceed $3 billion.

Officials believe sturgeon farming could become one of the sector’s most profitable segments. With increasing global demand for sustainably produced caviar and specialty seafood products, Türkiye aims to position itself as a major supplier in international markets.

The ministry noted that ongoing investments in modern aquaculture technologies, environmental sustainability measures, and production planning will play a critical role in achieving the export target. Industry experts also view sturgeon farming as a promising area for future growth due to its high added value and strong export potential.

If production targets are achieved, annual exports from the sturgeon industry alone could surpass $100 million, contributing to Türkiye’s broader strategy of increasing agricultural and aquaculture exports while strengthening its position in global seafood markets.
