Türkiye’s Electricity Generation Declines 3.09% in February

ANKARA — Türkiye’s electricity generation fell 3.09% year-on-year in February, reaching approximately 26.48 million megawatt-hours, according to the latest data from the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK).

The decline reflects a modest contraction in overall energy production compared to the same period last year, despite continued growth in electricity consumption.

Energy Mix Led by Hydropower

Hydroelectric plants accounted for the largest share of electricity production at 31.07%, followed by:

  • Imported coal: 21.47%
  • Wind energy: 15.28%
  • Lignite: 11.12%
  • Natural gas: 11.02%
  • Geothermal: 3.66%

Other sources such as biomass, solar, and fuel oil contributed smaller portions to the overall energy mix.

Electricity Consumption Rises Slightly

Despite the drop in production, electricity consumption increased by 0.64%, reaching 23.34 million megawatt-hours during the same period.

Sectoral distribution of consumption showed:

  • Industry: 39.6%
  • Residential (households): 30.9%
  • Services sector: 26.2%

Lighting and agricultural use made up relatively small shares.

Growing Consumer Base and Capacity

The number of electricity consumers rose by 2.53% year-on-year, exceeding 52 million, indicating continued expansion in demand.

Meanwhile, Türkiye’s installed electricity capacity increased by 2.51%, reaching approximately 100,090 megawatts, with natural gas and hydropower making up the largest shares of capacity.
