Turkiye’s greenhouse gas emissions increased in 2021

Total greenhouse gas emissions in Turkiye increased by 7.7% in 2021 compared to the previous year and were calculated as 564.4 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced the greenhouse gas emission data for 2021.

In this period, energy-related emissions had the largest share in total emissions as carbon dioxide equivalent with 71.3%, followed by industrial processes and product use with 13,3%, agriculture with 12.8% and waste sector with 2.6%, respectively.

While the total greenhouse gas emission per capita was 4 tons carbon dioxide equivalent in 1990, it was calculated as 6.3 tons in 2020 and 6.7 tons carbon dioxide equivalent in 2021.

Thus, in 2021, total greenhouse gas emissions increased by 7.7% compared to the previous year and reached 564.4 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Energy sector emissions increased by 9.8% in 2021 compared to the previous year, reaching 402.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent.

Emissions from industrial processes and product use were calculated as 75.1 million tons of CO2 equivalent in 2021, increasing by 10.6% compared to the previous year.

In this period, agricultural sector emissions decreased by 1.5% to 72.1 million tons of CO2 equivalent. Waste sector emissions, on the other hand, decreased by 9.9% and rose to 14.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent.
