Turkiye’s tourism income increased by 53.4% compared to the previous year

While Turkiye’s tourism income increased by 53.4% in 2022 compared to the previous year, it increased to $46 billion 284 million 907 thousand, while the number of visitors departing from the country was 51 million 369 thousand 26 people.

The Turkish Statistical Institute announced the tourism statistics for the 4th quarter of 2022 and the year in general.

Accordingly, tourism revenue increased by 53.4% compared to the previous year and reached $46 billion 284 million 907 thousand. Personal expenditures constituted $34 billion 477 million 12 thousand of last year’s income, and package tour expenditures constituted $11 billion 807 million 895 thousand.

The number of visitors departing from Turkiye increased by 75% in 2022 compared to the previous year and reached 51 million 369 thousand 26 people. 13.7% of these were citizens residing abroad with 7 million 27 thousand 504 people.

In this period, the average nightly expenditure per person was $89, and the average nightly expenditure of citizens residing abroad was $60.

Last year, package tour expenditures (the remaining share to the country) increased by 125.2%, spending on sports, education and culture by 90.5% and international transportation by 68.9%.

While “travel, entertainment, sportive and cultural activities” ranked first among the visitor’s purposes with 67.1%, citizens residing abroad came to Turkiye mostly for “visiting relatives and friends” with 64.4%.

Tourism expenditure increased by 130.9%

Last year, tourism expenditures increased by 130.9% compared to the previous year and reached $4 billion 276 million 533 thousand. $3 billion 753 million 403 thousand of this was personal and $523 million 130 thousand were package tour expenditures.

In the said year, the number of citizens visiting abroad increased by 165.4% compared to the previous year and reached 7 million 266 thousand 773. Their average expenditure per person was $589.

In the 4th quarter of last year, tourism income increased by 22.2% compared to the same period of the previous year and became $11 billion 374 million 206 thousand. 15.3% of tourism income was obtained from citizens residing abroad who visited Turkiye.

$8 billion 274 million 401 thousand of the expenditures of the visitors who organize their travels with personal or package tours in this quarter was personal expenditures and $3 billion 99 million 806 thousand were package tour expenditures.

In the 4th quarter of last year, compared to the same quarter of the previous year, package tour expenditures (remaining share in our country) increased by 63.5%, domestic international transportation expenditures increased by 49.5% and sports, education and culture expenditures increased by 42.4%.

The number of visitors departing from Turkiye increased by 32.4% in the said period and reached 11 million 978 thousand 111 people. Citizens residing abroad constituted 13.3% of the visitors, with 1 million 588 thousand 624 people.

In the same period, the average spend per night of visitors departing from Turkiye was $86. The average nightly expenditure of citizens residing abroad who spent the night was recorded as $58.

In this quarter, visitors visited Turkiye with 63% mostly for “travel, entertainment, sports and cultural activities”. “Visiting relatives and friends” took the second place with 23%, and “shopping” took the third place with 5.6%.

Citizens residing abroad, on the other hand, came to Turkiye mostly for “visiting relatives and friends” with 72.3%.

In the said quarter, the number of citizens visiting abroad increased by 109.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and reached 2 million 488 thousand 855.

The tourism expenditure of these people increased by 107.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and reached $1 billion 447 million 471 thousand. $1 billion 211 million 150 thousand of this was personal and $236 million 321 thousand was package tour expenses. The average expenditure per person was $582.
