Turkiye’s wind becomes the “driving force” in the fight against climate change

Turkiye contributes to electricity generation with 3,983 active wind turbines in 50 provinces. With an installed capacity of 11,101 megawatts, onshore wind energy has become a clean energy source in the fight against climate change.

In addition to onshore wind energy, Turkiye has a potential for offshore wind energy reaching 20 gigawatts.

With over 11 thousand megawatts of wind energy commissioned in the last 10 years, Turkiye has become able to use 10% of its onshore wind potential.

Aegean and Marmara have the priority for investment

In Turkiye, where mostly licensed power plants are located, the highest annual capacity increase in wind energy history was realized with approximately 1750 megawatts last year.

In onshore wind energy, all regions of Turkiye have the potential to generate electricity from wind. Aegean and Marmara seas are considered as a priority for investment in the country, which has a similar potential in offshore wind energy.

Turkiye also stands out in the production of wind energy equipment

Turkiye has developed its industry simultaneously with the increase in capacity in wind energy. It is calculated that Turkiye’s wind energy potential exceeds 100 thousand megawatts with new wind turbine technologies. More than 20 thousand people are employed in the fields of industry, construction, operation, maintenance and repair, including wind energy.

Wind energy equipment is exported to 45 countries in 6 continents from Turkiye, which ranks 5th in Europe in wind energy equipment production.

In addition, the capacity factor of wind power plants, which is 25% in European Union countries, is at the level of 35% in Turkiye.

Wind plays an important role in emission reduction target

While contributing to electricity generation with 3,983 wind turbines actively operating in Turkiye, ships, heavy tonnage trucks, cranes, special transport and assembly equipment are used for the logistics of towers, blades and nacelles in wind turbines, which consist of approximately 8 thousand parts and whose blade lengths reach 80 meters.

The turbine capacity, which was at the level of 2 megawatts about 10 years ago, can currently increase up to 12 megawatts, especially in offshore wind power plants. It takes 2 to 3 years for the turbines to start producing electricity.

Efforts to rapidly increase electricity generation from renewable energy sources continue in order to achieve emission reduction targets in Turkiye.

In Turkiye, where the number of wind energy projects in operation is 273, the decrease in wind energy installation costs over the years also offers important opportunities in achieving the targets.
