Van, a key tourist destination in eastern Türkiye, welcomed 719,000 Iranian tourists in 2024, significantly boosting the local economy. According to Fevzi Çeliktaş, Vice President of the Van Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Iranian visitors spend an average of $500 per trip, contributing approximately $350 million to the city’s economy.
The Kapıköy Border Gate, located in Saray district, serves as the main entry point for Iranian tourists. Their spending on shopping, dining, and entertainment plays a crucial role in sustaining local businesses.
Sharp Increase in Iranian Tourists Visiting Van
Over the past year, Van has seen a significant surge in visitors from Iran. In 2023, the number of Iranian tourists entering the city was 595,000, while in 2024, it increased by 124,000, reaching 719,000.
Highlighting the economic impact, Çeliktaş emphasized:
“Van’s lifeline is the Kapıköy Border Gate. The continuous increase in Iranian visitors each year proves that Van is a top destination for them. The financial contribution they bring to our city is immense. Each Iranian tourist spends an average of $500 per visit, generating around $350 million in economic value for the city. This wealth distribution benefits all sectors of the local economy.”
New Tehran-Van Railway to Boost Tourism in 2025
Looking ahead to 2025, tourism numbers are expected to rise further with the launch of the Tehran-Van railway line. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure recently announced the project, which is set to enhance accessibility for Iranian travelers.
Çeliktaş added:
“We anticipate over 1 million tourists in 2025. Alongside Kapıköy, other border gates like Ağrı-Gürbulak, Hakkari-Esendere, and Üzümlü are also bringing more visitors to Van. The new Tehran-Van train service, scheduled to begin on February 20, will further increase tourism. Tickets are already on sale, and the first trip is set for February 20. We hope these train services will continue daily, as they are crucial for maintaining tourist flow.”
Call for More Transportation Links to Van
To further boost the tourism sector, Çeliktaş called for additional flights between Van and Tehran, as well as Van and Erbil.
He also highlighted the need for infrastructure improvements, stating:
“Modernizing the Üzümlü Border Gate in Hakkari, and opening the Van-Şırnak highway will transform the city’s connectivity and economic outlook.”
With its strategic location and increasing tourist influx, Van is set to strengthen its position as a top travel destination for Iranian visitors in the coming years.
