World Bank Group to Invest in Türkiye’s Electricity Grid Modernization

ISTANBUL, July 23 – The World Bank Group will support a major investment program to strengthen and modernize Türkiye’s electricity transmission grid, aiming to accelerate the integration of renewable energy, improve grid reliability and enhance the country’s long-term energy security.

The initiative is expected to finance upgrades to Türkiye’s electricity transmission infrastructure, enabling the network to accommodate a growing share of wind and solar power while improving operational efficiency through digital technologies. The investment is part of the country’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy capacity and meet rising electricity demand.

According to the World Bank, modernizing the grid is essential for supporting Türkiye’s target of reaching 120 gigawatts of installed wind and solar capacity by 2035. The project will help expand transmission capacity, improve system flexibility and facilitate the integration of battery energy storage systems alongside renewable generation.

The World Bank Group said stronger transmission infrastructure will allow more renewable energy projects to connect to the grid, reduce network constraints and improve the reliability of electricity supply. The investment is also expected to mobilize additional private-sector financing and support Türkiye’s energy transition while strengthening industrial competitiveness.

The project forms part of the World Bank Group’s broader commitment to expanding electricity infrastructure and supporting clean energy investments in emerging markets. It aligns with Türkiye’s long-term objective of reducing dependence on imported energy while building a more resilient and sustainable power system.
