World’s Longest Driverless Train System Now Fully Operational in Saudi Arabia

The Orange Line (Line 3) will connect the eastern and western parts of Riyadh

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has announced the completion of the phased rollout of the Riyadh Metro, with the Orange Line officially beginning operations on Sunday, January 5. This marks the full operational launch of all six lines in the Riyadh Metro network.

Line 3, also known as the Orange Line, will connect the eastern and western parts of Riyadh, covering a 41-kilometer stretch from Jeddah Road in the west to the second eastern ring road near the Khashm Al Aan area in the east. This development finalizes the phased operation plan that was initially unveiled during the project’s inauguration by King Salman on November 27, 2024.

Starting at 6am on Sunday, passengers were welcomed at five stations along the Orange Line: Jeddah Road Station, Tuwaiq Station, Douh Station, Harun Al-Rashid Road Station, and Al-Naseem Station, which serves as a transfer point connecting the Orange Line with the Purple Line.

In addition to the Orange Line, the RCRC also announced the opening of three new stations on the Blue Line, which connects Olaya Street to Batha. These new stations are Al Morooj Station, Bank Al Bilad Station, and King Fahd Library Station.

Earlier phases of the Riyadh Metro network began in December 2024, with the operation of the Blue Line, Yellow Line, and Purple Line on December 1, followed by the Red Line and Green Line on December 15.

The full operation of all six lines will significantly improve connectivity across Riyadh, providing easier and more efficient transportation for both residents and visitors. The Riyadh Metro network, the largest in the Middle East and the longest driverless train system in the world, covers 176 kilometers, featuring 85 stations, including four main hubs.

Passengers can access the metro system from 6:00 am until midnight. Tickets can be purchased via the Darb application, ticket offices, or self-service machines at stations, with various digital payment options available, including credit cards, bank payments, and mobile devices.
