Domestic travel expenditures increased by 142.5% in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, exceeding ₺47 billion 792 million, and the average expenditure reached ₺2 thousand 971.
Turkish Statistical Institute announced “household domestic tourism” data for the April-June period.
Accordingly, 13 million 639 thousand people residing in the country went on a trip in the second quarter of the year. The total number of trips they made within the country, with one or more overnight stays, increased by 41% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 16 million 84 thousand. Travelers spent 100 million 108 thousand nights in this quarter. The average number of overnight stays was recorded as 6.2 nights.
Domestic travel expenses of domestic tourists increased by 142.5% in the said quarter compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching ₺47 billion 792 million 417 thousand.
90.6% of these expenditures were personal expenses with ₺43 billion 311 million 528 thousand, and 9.4% were package tour expenses with ₺4 billion 480 million 889 thousand. The average expenditure per trip was recorded as ₺2 thousand 971.
When the distribution rates of these types of expenditures in total travel expenditures are examined, the highest share was taken by food and beverage expenditures with 32.9%, transportation expenditures with 26.4% and accommodation expenditures with 14.4%. When the change rates of these types of expenditures compared to the same period of the previous year were examined, an increase of 197.3% in food and beverage expenditures, 73.4% in transportation expenditures and 235.1% in accommodation expenditures was observed.
Visiting relatives comes first
In the second quarter of this year, trips to visit relatives ranked first with 65.4%. This was followed by travel, entertainment, holiday with 27.7% and health with 3.3 percent.
Those who traveled in the April-June period mostly stayed at a “friend’s or relative’s house” with 70 million 880 thousand overnight stays. According to accommodation types, “own house” ranked second in the number of overnight stays with 12 million 872 thousand overnight stays, while “hotel” ranked third with 8 million 5 thousand overnight stays.
