Aksa Energy establishes an energy bridge between Turkiye and the TRNC with an interconnected submarine cable

With the new 15-year dollar-based contract it signed, Aksa Energy will establish an energy bridge between Turkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with an interconnected submarine cable.

According to the statement made by the company, Aksa Energy signed a historical contract with the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (KIB-TEK). Within the scope of the contract, the company will connect Turkiye and the TRNC with the ‘interconnected submarine electrical cable’ after the feasibility to be made.

In order to contribute to the uninterrupted energy access of the TRNC people, the company will increase the installed capacity of Kalecik Combined Cycle Fuel Oil Power Plant by 35 megawatts and increase its installed power on the island to 188 megawatts.

Aksa Energy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Cemil Kazanci, whose views are included in the statement, stated that they aim to establish an energy bridge between Turkiye and the TRNC with an interconnected submarine electrical cable. ‘We will take quick steps after feasibility for the realization of this giant project. We will put Aksa Energy’s signature on this energy bridge, which has been dreamed of for years in the TRNC.’

Emphasizing that Aksa Energy has been providing power to the people of Northern Cyprus for 20 years with Kalecik Combined Cycle Fuel Oil Power Plant and that they have met half of the TRNC’s energy needs, he said:

“Within the scope of the new 15-year contract we signed with KIB-TEK, we will continue to contribute to the energy supply security of the Turkish Cypriot people with all our strength, as we have done so far. In this context, we will rapidly increase our installed power to 188 megawatts by increasing the capacity of our current power plant on the island by 35 megawatts. As a company, we attach importance to geography and resource diversity in line with the ‘Sustainable High Growth’ strategy. Within the scope of our 2030 targets, we closely follow long-term and innovative projects in existing and new geographical regions. The energy bridge we plan to build between the TRNC and Turkiye with an interconnected submarine electrical cable will be one of the steps that will be considered historical as well as innovative in this context.’
