EU countries took the lead in Trabzon’s 9-month hazelnut exports

Companies operating in Trabzon exported the most hazelnuts to European Union countries in 9 months of the year. Hazelnut exports from the city to 55 countries, especially Italy, Germany and Poland, between January and September, increased by 15% compared to the same period last year.

Trabzon exported 62 thousand 797 tons of hazelnuts in January-September 2023, generating an income of $391 million 92 thousand 381.

Although exports decreased by 11% in quantity compared to the third quarter of 2022, when $340 million 278 thousand were earned for 70 thousand 678 tons of product, the revenue increased by 15%.

The three countries to which the hazelnut and products sector in Trabzon exported the most were Italy, Germany and Poland.

Hazelnuts worth $103 million 123 thousand were sold to Italy, $73 million 378 thousand to Germany and $48 million 842 thousand to Poland in the 9 months of the year.

Unlike last year, hazelnuts were also exported to Saudi Arabia, North Macedonia, Costa Rica and Bulgaria this period.

“In addition to income, we have also experienced improvement in country diversity in recent years.”

DKIB Hazelnuts and Products Sector Committee Chairman Mehmet Cirav said that hazelnuts are the traditional export product of Trabzon.

Reminding that there is only a short time until the end of the year, Cirav said, “We are hopeful that our hazelnut exports will exceed $500 million by the end of the year.”

Cirav pointed out that hazelnut exports from Trabzon have been made regularly throughout history and said, “Hazelnut exports in our country first started from Trabzon in the 1400s. Trabzon has maintained its superiority in realizing the largest portion of hazelnut exports throughout history until today.”

Stating that hazelnuts were sold to 55 countries from Trabzon in the January-September period, Cirav said, “The most were sold to European Union countries. In addition to the income obtained from exports, we have also experienced an improvement in country diversity in recent years. In this context, we exported hazelnuts to distant countries such as Brazil, China, USA, Canada and Japan.”
