Turkish Automotive Industry Aims to Achieve $35 Billion Export Record in 2024

Strategy Search Workshop was held by the Automotive Council, which continues its activities within the Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BTSO).

According to the statement made by BTSO, on the first day of the BTSO Automotive Council Strategy Search Workshop at Bursa Business School, the latest developments in the sector were evaluated, and on the second and last day, “digitalization”, “branding”, “governance” and “sustainability” sessions were held.

Baran Celik, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Uludag Automotive Industry Exporters Association (OIB), whose views were included in the statement, stated that the workshop was an important organization where all stakeholders were gathered under one roof.

Reminding that the automotive industry is Turkiye’s export champion, Celik continued as follows:

“Last year, we reached a record export figure of $35 billion on the 100th anniversary of the founding of our Republic. Our goal this year will be to exceed this figure and renew the record. On the other hand, as a sector, we are preparing for digital and green transformation. One of the most important issues on our agenda is the carbon tax that we will face as a result of the European Green Deal. As of October 1, 2023, a transition period that does not impose financial obligations has begun. We must make good use of this transition period and complete our preparations for the carbon tax by taking the necessary measures. As representatives of the entire sector, we are working with all our strength to ensure that our automotive industry successfully realizes this transformation.”

“Companies that are not innovative will lose their competitiveness”

BTSO Automotive Council President Rengin Eren also pointed out that the world is changing rapidly and emphasized that understanding and adapting to change is of great importance. Pointing out that the automotive industry is going through a major transformation process with rapidly changing technological trends, Eren said:

“We are all going through a process together, such as digitalization and green transformation, in which we have to rapidly improve our adaptability. In addition, the European Commission’s new regulation, which will come into force as of July 7, 2024, has also been published. Accordingly, important technology-oriented security measures are being taken into account for new cars. Companies that cannot keep up with innovations will face the risk of losing their competitiveness in the market. At this point, it is of great importance for all our companies to take action quickly. With the workshop, we will shed light on the future of our industry and determine our road maps to keep up with rapidly changing conditions.”

BTSO Board Member Muhsin Kocaslan stated that the automotive industry has a constantly changing and developing structure.

Stating that technological advances, environmental awareness and changing consumer demands encourage the sector to be dynamic, Kocaslan said, “Today, we have to define the automotive industry not only with the production and sales of vehicles, but also with innovations in areas such as mobility solutions, sustainability and digitalization. The purpose of our council structure is to gather all the dynamics of the sector around the same table, to activate common sense and to make our companies more competitive in the future. I would like to emphasize that the results obtained here will form the road map of the board of directors in line with the applicable targets.”

Council members and sector representatives attended the workshop, which aimed to increase the competitiveness of the sector and determine the road map.
