Turkish Airlines To Launch Flights To Detroit With Boeing 787

Detroit will become the airline’s 13th US gateway.

The airline that connects more countries than any other, Turkish Airlines, has announced its plans to introduce a 13th gateway to the United States, with Detroit joining the ever-growing list.

Turkish Airlines (TK), will launch its new service to Michigan on November 15th, initially operating three services per week, departing Detroit on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays eastbound with its state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The Istanbul-based carrier has recently increased its reach across the United States, with the launch of IST to New York Newark, and Dallas Fort-Worth, Texas in 2021. Washington state also welcomed a direct service to the TK hub, with Seattle joining the network in 2022. Colorado is also soon set to benefit, with Turkish Airlines mooting it will commence services between Denver International Airport (DEN) and Istanbul International Airport (IST). However, its launch date is yet to be confirmed. Its current US gateways are Atlanta, Washington DC, New York,Newark, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Miami, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

With Turkish Airlines looking to capitalize on a solid post-pandemic rebound and many travelers looking to explore, the airline aims to reach up to two million US visitors to Turkey each year. Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat, released this statement:

“It’s exciting to open another gateway in the Midwest region, connecting travelers from neighboring areas through the bustling hub of Detroit. This is a significant opening in our expansion plans for North America as we continue our mission of connecting more people and more destinations through our robust global route network. As flights from Detroit Metropolitan Airport take off this fall, we warmly welcome travelers to explore Istanbul and beyond.”

The schedule:

With three flights per week, the carrier will facilitate operations between Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Istanbul International Airport (IST) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, offering passengers heading from Detroit the opportunity to connect to the carrier’s extensive network, to over 340 destinations in 129, across five continents, such as 75 onward connections into Asia, or 55 to Africa. Flight numbers TK205 / 206 have been granted for the flights and will operate as:

  • TK205, departing Istanbul at 15:45, touching down in Detroit the same at 18:50
  • TK206, returning from Detroit at 21:35, landing back in Istanbul the following day at 15:35

The Star Alliance member will also entice passengers looking to connect with the carrier to stop and smell the roses of Istanbul with its popular stopover program, enabling economy class passengers up to two nights and business class for up to three, at no cost. It encourages passengers to explore the sights of the country’s largest city, which straddles two continents.

IST – Istanbul International Airport, the world’s largest international transit hub, operates up to 80 different destinations within a three-hour flight, enabling US travelers a plethora of destinations to pick from in its ever-expanding network.
