Turkiye: $180 million export target in the flower industry

The flower industry, which closed last year with exports of approximately $140 million, aims to increase its market share by selling $180 million of products abroad in 2024.

Turkiye, which has more than 3,500 endemic plant species in its flora, exports a significant amount especially in cut flowers, indoor and outdoor plants, flower bulbs, seedlings, saplings, wreaths and moss groups.

The sector, which produces in greenhouses and plateaus throughout the year, sells to 73 countries, mainly the Netherlands.

Ismail Yilmaz, President of the Ornamental Plants and Products Exporters Association, said that despite the economic crisis and wars in the world, they exported approximately $140 million last year.

Stating that they started the new year with hope, Yıimaz said, “We have higher expectations from 2024 because we hope that the crisis in the world will ease, and the indicators in our country also show the same. Therefore, we expect an increase in this direction in the ornamental plants sector. We have an expectation of $180 million, and there is a potential in the sector to reach this.”

Explaining that they expanded abroad by taking advantage of the International Competitiveness Development Project of the Ministry of Commerce to increase exports and organized commercial delegations as a union, Yilmaz noted that they tried to reach almost all markets.

Yilmaz stated that after the Netherlands, England, Germany, Romania and Bulgaria are among the important markets.

Stating that they aim to both open up to new markets and increase the share in existing markets this year, Yilmaz said, “Japan is an important market. We are present in this market, but we want to get a larger share. We examine the countries with the idea of ‘Where can we improve exports’ and organize different organizations there. The use of flowers is more in countries with developed economies, and we are present in most of these countries.”
