Automotive exports reached $2.5 billion in September

The automotive industry’s exports in September decreased by 5% to $2.5 billion. The sector, whose exports for the period January-September 2021 increased by 24% to $21.3 billion, again ranked first in Turkey’s exports.

Automotive, which has been the leading sector of the Turkish economy for 15 years in a row, decreased on a monthly basis as we entered the last quarter of the year. The automotive industry’s exports in September decreased by 5% to $2.5 billion. In addition, in the first nine months of the year, January-September 2021, automotive exports increased by 24% to $21.3 billion. The sector, with an average monthly export of $2.36 billion in the first nine months of this year, again ranked first in Turkey’s exports.

The interruptions in motor vehicle production due to the semiconductor chip crisis, which is effective on a global scale, continue to have a negative impact on automotive exports. While exports of passenger cars and bus-midibus-minibuses decreased in double digits, exports of motor vehicles for transporting goods increased by double digits. The United Kingdom rose to the top of the list for the first time this year, surpassing Germany, the largest automotive export market. Exports to the UK increased by 20%. The double-digit increase in exports to the USA and Russia continued.

In September, exports of the supply industry were again the largest product group. Exports of the supply industry increased by 7% to $1 billion 48 million, while exports of passenger cars decreased by 29% to $642 million, exports of motor vehicles for the transport of goods increased by 17% to $570 million, and bus-minibuses-midibus exports decreased by 26% to $118 million.

While exports to Germany, which is the country with the most exports in the supply industry, increased by 3% , exports increased by 30% to the USA, 62% to Russia, 16% to Poland, 24% to Belgium, and 27% to the Netherlands which are also important markets. Exports decreased by 11% to France, 65% to Romania and 38% to Slovenia.

In September, the United Kingdom surpassed Germany, which is the largest export market in automotive on a country basis, and became the country with the highest exports. $338 million were exported to the United Kingdom with an increase of 20%. While exports to Germany were $319 million with a decrease of 5%, exports to France, the third largest market, decreased by 34% to $200 million. In September, exports decreased by 23% to Italy, 34% to Poland, 31% to Israel, 51% to Romania, 12% to the Netherlands, and 23% to Egypt. On the other hand, exports increased by 23% to the USA, 74% to Russia, 53% to Denmark, and 64% to Portugal.

Exports to the European Union countries, which are the largest market on the basis of country group, decreased by 16% in September and became $1 billion 445 million. The share of EU countries in exports was 59%. In September, exports to other European countries increased by 21%, to the Commonwealth of Independent States by 43%, and to the North American Free Trade Zone by 20.5%.
