A new stage has been entered in Akkuyu NPP

The 4th layer of the inner protection shell, which is one of the main elements of the security system of nuclear power plants, was installed in the reactor building of the 2nd power unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant.

According to the statement made by the company, the inner protection shell consisting of steel coating and special concrete used for sealing the reactor building ensures the protection of the reactor building.

The installation of the layer with an inner radius of 22 meters, a height of 8 meters and a weight of more than 144 tons, which took 3 months, was carried out using the Liebherr LTM 1300 truck crane, one of the most powerful Liebherr LR-13000 crawler cranes in the world, and two hydraulic devices.

Also for the installation of the layer, a special traverse was developed, which protects the prefabricated structure from deformation during the movement of the crane.

Sergey Butskikh, First Deputy General Manager and Construction Director of Akkuyu NPP, whose views are included in the statement, said the following regarding the completed works:

“An important element of the reactor building is the inner protection vessel, which consists of structures of different shapes. The 4th layer is the last of the cylindrical structures. Then, the assembly of the dome, which is planned to be installed this summer, will begin. Our many years of experience saves us time and maximizes the use of available resources. Next, we plan to weld the third and fourth layers, reinforce and assemble the embedded parts, including the transport and personnel lock elements.”

On the other hand, the reactor buildings of the power units at Akkuyu NPP are equipped with double protection shells. The reinforced concrete outer protection shell is designed to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 9, tsunamis, hurricanes and combinations of extreme external factors.
