Aviation leaders will meet in Istanbul for the future of the industry at IATA

The 79th annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will be held on June 4-6 in Istanbul with the agenda of the recovery of the aviation industry after the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to the statement made by IATA, the event will focus on the economic outlook and sustainability of the sector.

After the 79th annual general meeting of IATA, the “World Air Transport Summit” will be held.

More than 300 member airline officials, government representatives, airline equipment suppliers will meet at the meeting to discuss changing energy markets, recalibrated supply chains and challenges facing the industry.

In addition, aviation leaders attending the summit will discuss the contribution of aviation to Turkiye’s post-earthquake recovery.

“On Monday, June 5, Istanbul will be the aviation capital of the world”

In his assessment on the subject, IATA Director General Willie Walsh stated that “Istanbul will be the aviation capital of the world on Monday, June 5th,” and noted that the airline industry representatives will review the industry’s post-COVID-19 recovery process, sustainability and challenges at the event in Istanbul.

“Turkiye has become an incredible global aviation powerhouse”

“Decisions at this plenary will set the direction for even more effective global connectivity,” Walsh said.

Regarding Turkiye’s aviation industry, Walsh said, “Since our last visit to Istanbul, Turkiye has become an incredible global aviation powerhouse. Its carriers are leading the way in regional and international connectivity, and the gorgeous new airport puts some other countries’ lack of airport investment to shame. There is no doubt that Turkiye’s importance in terms of global aviation will continue to increase significantly.”

Pegasus Airlines Chairman of the Board of Directors and IATA Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mehmet T. Nane, stated that they are very proud to host the representatives of the aviation industry in Istanbul.

Nane said, “Aviation came together to help the people of Turkiye rebuild after the tragic earthquake in February. And now aviation is coming together to discuss vital issues regarding our path towards our goal of net zero carbon CO2 by 2050, the diversity of our industry, our operational recovery from the depths of COVID-19, and more.”

While Turkiye’s aviation market is recovering after COVID-19, it was stated in the statement that travels to and from Turkiye increased by approximately 60% in 2022 and is currently the 7th largest international passenger market in the world.

Istanbul, which hosted the annual general meeting of IATA in 2008, will host the same meeting for the second time this year.
