Cauliflower export from Bafra Plain to European Union countries and Russia

Cauliflower, which is grown on an area of approximately 15 thousand decares in the Bafra district of Samsun, is sent to the European Union countries and Russia.

Bafra Plain, which has fertile soils formed by the alluviums carried by Kizilirmak, stands out with its winter vegetable production as well as summer.

Ibrahim Saglam, Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that vegetables are produced on an area of 150 thousand decares in the winter season throughout Samsun.

Pointing out that the production area is 230 thousand decares when we look at the production in terms of summer and winter vegetable production, Saglam said, “There is an annual average of 1 million 48 tons of vegetable production. Cabbage and cauliflower are the most produced among them. We are in the first place in cauliflower and cabbage production in Turkiye.”

Noting that cauliflower is produced on an area of 15 thousand decares in Bafra Plain and 60 thousand tons of products are purchased annually, Saglam said, “Cauliflower is exported to European Union countries and Russia. Exports of not only cauliflower but also vegetables such as leeks, cabbage and broccoli have been started in the last 2 years. We have exported 500 tons to European Union countries and 1500 tons to Russia in the last 6 months. We aim to export 2 thousand 500 tons of cauliflower this year. Our exports are also pleasing for our farmers.”

Stating that the vegetable analysis carried out in the laboratory in Mersin in the past years has been carried out in the Provincial Control Laboratory for the last 2 months, Saglam said, “We developed the laboratory in Samsun with the support of our Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Now that the analyzes are carried out here, our exports will increase in the coming years. In the coming years, we will also start exporting radishes and capia peppers. Capia pepper goes to many cities of Turkiye from Samsun, but I think we will start exporting if we can promote it in the European Union and Russia.”

“As exports continue, production will be carried out in larger areas”

Yusuf Bayrak, the owner of the export company, explained that they have been promoting in the foreign market for 3 years so that the products produced in Bafra can be sold, and said:

“We have started to export regularly for the last 1 year. Winter vegetables produced in Bafra Plain have a different flavor. I send them to three or four regions in Russia. We export to Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, Moldavia and Austria in the Balkans. If a few more companies like us do this export, we can evaluate Bafra’s products in the best way. Our farmers are also satisfied with our exports. We also contribute to employment. As exports continue, production will be carried out in larger areas.”
